Did you know that deaf-friendly improvements involve minor changes in wiring and plumbing? It's just that simple!
We have implemented changes in interior wiring to allow the typical doorbell to be connected to an interior lighting source.
Today deaf adults can access video relay phone services that allow them to see and communicate with an interpreter using sign language instead of the old TDD/TTY phone service which required alot of typing. So much more can be communicated through signing and facial expressions making the process of accessing vital services much easier.
More research is needed to develop products that make the home environment safer for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. This is a growing population due in part to the overall aging of America. More and more people are experiencing hearing loss as a result of work related accidents or aging.
We seek to fund research into the technologies that will make life easier for this population. We also have a responsibility to educate landlords and developers about the needs of deaf tenants and to assist them with economical ways to provide safe, deaf-friendly housing.
