Welcome to Collective Housing and New Growth Alternatives, Inc. (CHANGA)
Collective Housing and New Growth Alternatives has a mission of providing affordable, safe rental housing for deaf and hard-of-hearing adults. This is an opportunity to provide deaf-friendly housing with built-in improvements that assist the deaf and hard of hearing in daily livings tasks.
Did you know that deaf-friendly improvements involve minor changes in wiring and plumbing? It's just that simple!
CHANGA is working with other organizations to identify and/or develop housing improvements for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. We also work to secure affordable rental housing that can be renovated and made safe and deaf-friendly. For example, we have implemented changes in interior wiring to allow the typical doorbell to be connected to an interior lighting source. When the doorbell rings, a deaf person is alerted by the flashing light.
Doorbell wiring to interior lighting sources
Video relay phone services (made available through a local phone company provider)
Deaf alarm clocks
Sensor-driven water faucets for the home environment
Smoke detectors with strobe lights
Home Security and Fire Alert Systems
These improvements don't just make a home deaf-friendly. They make it safe.
*Our renovations and improvements are installed by licensed, qualified contractors.
More research is needed to develop products that make the home environment safer for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. This is a growing population due in part to the overall aging of America. More and more people are experiencing hearing loss as a result of work related accidents or aging. Recent estimates report the deaf and hard of hearing population in the United States at approximately 35 million people. Of that number 4.5 million are functionally deaf, meaning they cannot hear without a device.
We seek to fund research into the technologies that will make life easier for this population. We also have a responsibility to educate landlords and developers about the needs of deaf tenants and to assist them with economical ways to provide safe, deaf-friendly housing.
CHANGA is a small, community-based organization, seeking volunteers who can help spread the word about the need for deaf-friendly housing, help build our Board of Directors, and help us build housing. We invite you to become a volunteer by registering here on the website.
Funding is needed to develop safe, affordable housing in our communities, continue needed research efforts in deaf-friendly housing improvements and provide much needed education on these issues. Your generous donations are fully tax-deductible and will make a huge difference in the lives of deaf adults, children and their families. Please click on the DONATE button and contribute to our efforts.
